Fripp Fm

Period:
Triassic

Age Interval:
Early Triassic (Induan)

Province:
SouthAfrica-Namibia-Botswana

Type Locality and Naming

Soutpansberg, Tshipise, Pafuri, and Tuli Basins (Limpopo Province, South Africa). Named after the farm Fripp in the Soutpansberg/Soutpansberg region of the Limpopo Province. Lower formation in Beaufort Gr

Lithology and Thickness

A topographically prominent, high-energy arenaceous (sandy) succession. It typically ranges from 15 meters to up to 60 meters in thickness, heavily dependent on the local tectonic blocks within the rift basins. It consists predominantly of medium- to very coarse-grained, well-sorted, white to pale-pinkish arkosic and feldspathic sandstones.

Lithology Pattern:
Sandstone

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

Rests conformably (though often with a sharp, scoured basal contact) upon the dark, carbonaceous shales and siltstones of the Mikambeni Fm.

Upper contact

Conformably overlain by the fine-grained, grey to purplish mudrocks of the Solitude Fm

Regional extent

Restricted geographically to the ENE-WSW trending, fault-bounded Karoo remnant basins of northern South Africa (the Soutpansberg, Tshipise, Pafuri, and Tuli basins), which extend slightly across the Limpopo River into neighboring Zimbabwe and Botswana.Uppermost Ecca Gr equivalent in the northern basins. It is situated between the Mikambeni Fm (Middle Ecca equivalent) and the Solitude Fm (Beaufort Gr equivalent).
